In a first, 1.24 MT of plastic waste has been used to construct a road in Narangi Military Station, Guwahati. This is a pilot project of the Military Engineer Services for Road Construction.
The construction has been initiated in line with the Narendra Modi-led central government’s mission against single-use plastic and call to reduce, reuse and recycle plastic waste.
As per a report by the World Economic Forum, the roads made from waste plastic are not only greener but more durable against extreme weather conditions like floods and heat as compared to conventional roads.
Goalpara is the first district in Assam to have built 237.652 km of the 565-km total stretch using green technologies.
Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Prakash Javadekar recently told Lok Sabha that 40 per cent of plastic waste collected in India is currently uncollected and littered on the streets. A whopping 25,940 tonnes per day of plastic waste is generated in India.
To deal with the growing menace of plastic pollution, the center has made it mandatory for all road developers in the country to use plastic waste for road construction.
